Grey Spaces, co-founded by partners Mashama Bailey and Johno Morisano, is a hospitality company which operates the critically acclaimed The Grey restaurant, a 2023 Best Restaurant semi-finalist and Diner Bar in the Thompson Austin hotel, which was lauded by The Austin American-Statesman and Austin Monthly Magazine as one of the city’s Best New Restaurants, for its distinct take on Port City Southern fare. Additionally, the company operates The Grey Market in Austin, TX and Savannah, GA, where the company is headquartered.
We are driven by an ethos of genuine commitment to the communities in which we do business, firmly believing that hospitality plays a foundational role in the continued economic and civic development in communities. Grey Spaces provides food, drink and lifestyle experiences that celebrate local history and customs in a contemporary, forward-thinking way.
At the center of everything the company does is its people. A culture of creativity, innovation, good humor and most of all, heart, attracts the best and the brightest talent, seeking not just employment, but the opportunity to make a difference in the communities they serve and thrive.
Our company is led by Mashama Bailey & Johno Morisano. Mashama was recently named “the most important chef in America” by the Financial Times, and has won the 2022 James Beard Outstanding Chef — the first Black woman to receive the honor — and the 2019 James Beard Best Chef: Southeast.
Johno Morisano oversees guest experience, business growth, strategy and operations. Together with Mashama, he co-wrote Black, White and The Grey (Ten Speed Press/Penguin Random House) which explores the business partners’ challenges navigating race, class and culture while building businesses, relationships, and community in the South.
